 Tiaras & Nobility
T he exceptional exhibition “Power & Image: Royal & Aristocratic Tiaras” organised by Sotheby’s which has been held from 28 May to 15 June 2022, is rightly placed among the numerous art, literature, and design events that make-up the rich programme of celebrations of the “Queen’s Platinum Jubilee”
for 70 uninterrupted years of Queen Elizabeth II’s Reign. The exhibition, which has seen the largest display of tiaras set up by Sotheby’s in the United Kingdom in the last 20 years, includes a series of important royal manuscripts, 46 royal tiaras from Britain and Europe and contemporary tiaras of British designers (the latter are on sale) in addition to the portraits of all seven reigning queens of Britain: Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Victoria, Queen Anne, Mary I and Mary II, Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II. Most of the royal tiaras have been handed down through the family for generations and are rarely loaned for public display; their range reflects the subsequent evolutions of design, motivated by royal tastes, social changes and the influence of other forms of art, up to recent and contemporary history. As stated by Sotheby’s, all the tiaras on show have been crafted and owned by British nobility and, overall, they offer a complete review of all the major styles of design of the tiaras, including the Napoleonic Empire, Romantic Naturalism, Belle Epoque, Art Deco, modern and contemporary.
