JEWELLERY AND BODY ADORNMENT FROM THE NGV COLLECTION
“Jewels and body adornment” of the NGV Collection, tell the story of body adornment as a global shared practice and are on show based on four themes: identity and location, status and aspiration, ceremony and ritual, values and feeling. The essential connection between these ornaments and their relationship with the body underlines the meaning of the works according to deeply rooted concepts of identity and belonging, culture and community. The precious manufactured articles range from ceremonial and talismanic to decorative and conceptual, and challenge conventional thought on the essence of the jewel through the pairing of fine materials, such as precious gems, iridescent metals and shells, with other more unusual items such as hair, plastic, and rubber.
