bonfire. The gem is mentioned in the Bible with the Jewish name of ‘pitdah’ and it is said that it was used in the legendary breastplates of the Jewish high priests. In ancient beliefs, peridot was considered a gift of Mother Nature to celebrate the annual creation of a new world. History also tells of objects in peridot used by sailors and pirates as amulets able to light the way, distancing fears and evil spirits. Through the spoils of war at the hands of the Crusaders, peridot was later imported into Europe where, little by little, it found an ever-expanding public of admirers and collectors, reaching the pinnacle of success during the Belle Époque.
