An artistic movement called “Japonisme” by the French artist Philippe Burty had a profound effect on all Western culture of the second half of the 19th century, involving fine arts, sculpture, architecture, scenic arts and decorative arts. In a particular way, starting from the 1920s to date, the art of the Land of the Rising Sun has exerted a profound attraction on the designers of Maison Van Cleef & Arpels, inspiring them to adopt its motifs and symbols, to translate its techniques and materials and to adapt the objects to them.
